About Chemical Peels

Land a nice fresh skin glow with no downtime

Our Chemical Peels

At Pavilion Cosmetic Medicine, our clinical peels give you the ability to quickly improve your skin with little or no downtime, targeting issues such as dryness, pigmentation, acne, acne scarring, sun damage, fine lines, uneven skin tone and congestion.

Chemical peels use higher strength solutions of different grades of acids to exfoliate the outermost layers of the skin and increase cellular turnover, resulting in a growth of healthy new skin cells. They also promote your body’s natural production of collagen and elastin, the building blocks of healthy, firm and plump skin.

These chemicals – ranging from alpha hydroxy acids like glycolic, lactic and mandelic acids; beta hydroxy acids like salicylic acids to retinoid acids (vitamin A) and TCA (trichloroacetic acid) – vary in their depth of penetration, causing them to directly target specific concerns. They also vary in intensity, from lighter to deeper peels. Typically, the stronger the strength of the peel, the deeper the penetration.

Results

The results of your chemical peel will depend on the type and depth of the peel that was used, as well as the skill of the therapist administering your peel. Chemical peels are not a one-size-fits-all treatment and optimal results will require a tailored, layered approach. Our dermal therapists have extensive knowledge of the skin and how the different chemical peels work on the skin to provide the results you are after.

For most peels we use at Pavilion Cosmetic Medicine, you should see improved skin radiance immediately. Full results, including improved texture, clarity, firmness and reduction in wrinkles and fine lines, are seen once the skin has fully healed and shed its outer layers, usually within two to three weeks.

In many cases, one chemical peel is all that is required to achieve significant skin rejuvenation results that last several months. For others, a series of peels and sometimes other modalities are required to compensate for years of sun damage. Your Dermal Clinician will discuss in detail the type, depth and number of peels recommended to achieve the best possible results.

Maintaining a proper skincare regimen and protecting your skin from UV exposure between peels will help ensure longer lasting results.

What to expect

Your Treatment Experience

Your chemical peel appointment includes a skin assessment and consultation with our Dermal Clinician who will discuss your skin concerns, desired treatment outcomes, any possible downtime and results, suitability of chemical peels and tailoring your treatment plan if necessary.

Our experienced clinician will also provide you with the relevant aftercare instructions that you will need to follow to protect your skin and maintain your results.

Your Dermal Clinician will perform a double cleanse to your skin and assess the peel suitability. Our Clinician will them apply a prepping solution to degrease the skin’s surface allowing for an even and deeper peel application. Once the peel solution is applied most of our patients experience a mild tingling but tolerable sensation.

You may expect some mild flushing or redness, flaking and dryness similar to a sunburn post treatment as the new layers of the skin start to form. This could last for several days depending on the peel’s strength, but typically no time off work is required.

It is important to follow your Dermal Clinician aftercare instructions to ensure best results. This includes avoiding UV exposure and wearing sunscreen at all times while outside – this includes on cloudy days and even when working inside if you are sitting by a window. Using a gentle but hydrating moisturiser is recommended to help control peeling and relieve dryness for a few days after your chemical peel.

Often, we recommended combing our chemical peel with other modalities to boost results. These additional treatments can include Healite and SkinPen amongst many other modalities.

Your Questions Answered

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

Do I need to prep my skin before a chemical peel?

Yes. UV exposure should be avoided for two weeks prior to your treatment, as well as certain active skincare ingredients including AHAs, BHAa and retinol. Your dermal therapist will provide you with a detailed lift of pre- and post-peel steps to ensure you achieve the optimal results from your chemical peel.

Does more peeling mean better results?

Not necessarily. In addition to the depth of the peel you received, the amount of peeling you experience will depend on your pre-existing skin condition. Regardless of how much you peel, your skin is still shedding skin cells at an accelerated rate – this is what results in improvement of skin tone and texture.

What are the potential risks and side effects?

When performed by a qualified and experienced dermal therapist, and following your therapist’s aftercare instructions, chemical peels have an excellent safety profile with minimal risk of severe complications.

The most common side effects are temporary redness, dryness, stinging and mild swelling. More serious risks, though rare, include scarring, infection and post-inflammatory pigmentation (PIH).

How much does a chemical peel cost?

The cost of a chemical peel depends on the type of peel and whether a course of peels is recommended. At Pavilion Cosmetic Medicine, our chemical peels range from $140 to $210.
