Why Collagen Stimulators?
Facial ageing is a complex process of volume loss, descent of facial fat, decrease in collagen and elastin, and bone resorption, resulting in sagging and deflated skin, hollowed temples, sunken cheeks, poor skin texture and wrinkles. Collagen stimulators are volumising injectables that can help improve all of these signs of ageing, gradually adding volume and improving skin quality for more youthful-looking facial contours. Refer to our dermal filler guide for more information.
By restoring collagen, a key structural element of firm, supple and youthful skin, collagen stimulators are able to noticeably improve sunken areas of the face, a sagging neck and reduce lines and wrinkles.
Collagen stimulators, also called biostimulator fillers, work by adding volume and structure but they aren’t technically a dermal filler. They differ from dermal fillers as they stimulate your skin to produce more of its own collagen and other skin-firming proteins for long-lasting results, whereas fillers are implanted into specific parts of your face to provide instant volume replacement which typically will not last as long.
Some collagen stimulators also offer an immediate plumping effect, but in general their most visible results are gradually seen over a period of weeks to months as the effects of collagen synthesis become evident. They may also help to lift the soft tissues of the skin as well as improve the complexion. Many patients also prefer the “natural” aspect of stimulating your body’s own resources, ie collagen, to help reverse the signs of ageing.
Biostimulators may also be more suited for patients with more extensive and diffuse volume loss as they provide more uniform collagen stimulation. They can also be injected much deeper into the skin’s dermal layer to help rebuild structure around the skeleton as well as provide superficial volume.
Treatment with biostimulator injections are most common on the face and neck, but it can be used on just about any area of the body with crepey skin and lost volume.
Collagen stimulators can also be combined with wrinkle relaxers and dermal fillers for exceptional anti-ageing results. At Pavilion Cosmetic Medical, we offer the most trusted and well-known treatments and will provide you with a tailored treatment plan that best suits your aesthetic goals and desired outcomes.
How do collagen stimulators work?
Collagen stimulators are a minimally invasive injectable treatment using a medical-grade biocompatible synthetic substance. Biostimulators can be injected deep into the dermis, to act as scaffolding for bony tissue support, or into the facial fat pockets and sub dermis, for a more superficial filling effect.
There are two main types of collagen stimulators. The first type works by triggering an inflammatory reaction which breaks down the product while it stimulates collagen production.
The second type binds to the soft tissues of the skin and acts as a scaffold that stimulates the growth of surrounding tissue and collagen. This type does provide immediate volume in addition to the long-term benefit of extended collagen production.
Collagen stimulators are gradually metabolised by the body over a period of 1-4 years, depending on the type of biostimulator used.
At Pavilion Cosmetic Medicine, we offer the only approved collagen stimulating products available in Australia. Depending on your unique objectives, which we will discuss with you during a Cosmetic Doctor consultation or treatment session, we will assess recommend an optimal product type for your individual goals.

Results
Biostimulators can correct significant volume loss resulting from age or illness, as well as achieve excellent neck rejuvenation results.
One of the main benefits of collagen stimulators is that their effects are both very natural-looking and long lasting. Depending on the product used and the rate at which your body naturally degrades the product, the anti-ageing effects can last for 1-4 years.
Due to its action of stimulating your own collagen, the full effect of collagen stimulators can take 2-3 months.
Depending on the type of biostimulator your doctor recommends, 1-3 treatments are required for optimal results.
What to expect
The procedure
Biostimulators are some of our most popular treatments at Pavilion Cosmetic Medicine. For the right candidate, they offer dramatic yet natural-looking anti-ageing results.
You will first meet with our cosmetic doctor who will listen to your concerns and desired outcomes and recommend the best treatment plan for you. If you are a good candidate for collagen stimulators, we will explain the procedure in detail and you can typically proceed straight to treatment.
Collagen stimulator injections are minimally invasive with only some slight discomfort, just like a regular dermal filler treatment. Your skin will be numbed with a topical anaesthetic beforehand to make your experience as comfortable as possible.
The treatment itself normally takes around 30 minutes, depending on the area being treated and amount of product required.
Just like any cosmetic injectable treatment, you may experience some redness, swelling and occasionally bruising at the injection sites, but these should completely disappear over the next few days. More serious complications include infection and allergic reaction, but these are uncommon.
Frequently asked questions (FAQs)
What’s the difference between collagen stimulators and dermal fillers?
Both biostimulators and HA dermal fillers work to add volume and structure, however their mechanisms in doing so differ. The main difference is that collagen stimulators add diffuse volume by promoting the production of new collagen over time, whereas dermal fillers are placed in specific areas of the face to provide instant volume.
Each of these volumising injectables is unique in its composition, texture and density. Certain products work better for different areas and concerns. All of our cosmetic practitioners are experienced and knowledgeable in the different types of cosmetic injectables and will advise on the best fillers for your particular goals.
